What is digital health?
How the five pillars answer the 'What is Digital Health?' question in plain-English

Digital health is the use of technology, data and the people who run them to deliver and improve health and care. That definition is accurate, but it doesn't show you how the field fits together. Most people only see one part of it: patients see the app, clinicians see the screen, boards see the budget line. The Five Pillars of Digital Health give you the whole map on one page.
The five pillars
Foundation (infrastructure): wifi and network architecture, data centres and cloud hosting, servers and storage, end-user devices, identity and access, and cyber security. Does the technology work, reliably, where care happens?
Lifeblood (data): data quality, integration, analytics, clinical coding and information governance. Is the information right, shared safely and usable?
Compass (leadership and strategy): strategy, governance, investment and programme leadership. Are we heading somewhere deliberate?
Bedside (clinical practice and informatics): clinical systems in use, clinical safety and digital clinical leadership. Does it help the person in front of you?
Future (education and training): digital skills, system training, induction and career pathways. Are people ready, and is there a route in?
Why the order matters
Each pillar is a precondition for the next. Data can't flow on infrastructure that isn't there, strategy built on unreliable data is guesswork, and no clinical tool lasts without trained people to run it.
Picture a fictional ward introducing an AI scribe. The recording fails in rooms with weak wifi, the notes are copied into the record by hand, the pilot funding ends after six months, nobody is sure who checks the output, and the two trained staff move on. The AI worked. Every problem sat in a pillar around it.
An AI scribe is only as good as the ward's wifi signal.
Three ways to use the map
Explain: newcomers and career changers can find the pillar closest to what they already do well.
Decide: project teams can ask one question per pillar before a tool goes live.
Govern: boards can see what a decision depends on without reading the technical detail.
Where to go next
If you're exploring a move into the field, try the Digital Health Careers Matcher to find your pillar, then browse live roles sorted by pillar on the Five Pillars Vacancy Tracker. If you work in digital health already, the interactive "Switch a pillar off" page shows what breaks when one pillar is missing.
Digital health is five jobs that look like one.
